Sustainability at SSP

We'll update this page with new discoveries during our sustainability journey - working in line with the University of Surrey's 2030 Net Zero goal.

Surrey Sports Park is proud to announce that alongside the University of Surrey it is driving towards Net-Zero 2030 and has a progressive strategy to get it there. The staff at the Sports Park are working alongside the sustainability team at the university to stress test the building and find areas of improvement from maintaining the pool temperature to heating reception more efficiently.

Alongside the sustainability team, SSP has created a RECPlan. This is a plan which targets the reduction of energy and carbon. Things as small as turning all lights off in the evening to placing solar panels on the roof are all part of this plan. Current protocols and changes that have already been put in place include:

- UV lights which clean the pool water reducing the need for chemicals.

- Production of our own chlorine reducing transportation and processing.

- Central heating and air con controlled from central space to reduce overuse.

- Moving to LED lighting.

- Automated taps to remove wastage.

Alongside this, a feasibility study has been commissioned with sustainability at its heart. It’s looking into ways to increase green spaces; utilising grey water and maximising efficiencies in airflow to reduce heating/cooling amongst other things. These efficiencies will be implemented over the coming 5 years.

A major driver for this is working alongside the university to bring solar power to the campus. The Solar panels being fitted to the roof of the Sports Park, along with the solar farm plans adjacent at Blackwell Farm, are all part of the University’s commitment to embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals into operations, teaching and research.
